There’s something about a butterfly that just brings me delight. I’m not sure whether it’s the way they flit and flutter about, the light reflecting off their iridescent wings or maybe it just reminds me of being a kid wonderstruck at their transformative process. But no matter how busy I am, there’s something about a butterfly that makes me pause and take in its beauty.
Now take that encounter and multiply it by hundreds! Such is your experience at Butterfly World at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Florida.
After passing the butterfly lab where you can see butterfly life cycle close up, you make your way into one of two Aviaries with beautiful plants, water features and pathways. Here you are totally immersed in a sea of butterflies fluttering about through the dappled sunlight as if dancing to the classical music that’s playing. It’s magical and breathtaking. The first time I went there, I actually started to cry! It is truly a respite from the hustle and bustle of the South Florida life outside this mesmerizing place.
From the butterfly aviaries you wind your way through the secret garden filled with numerous varieties of passion vine (Passiflora) and other interesting plants. Two bird aviaries, a lorikeet encounter, a suspension bridge and cafe round out your trip there along with the museum and Insectarium which has hundreds of butterfly species from around the world on display. The colors, patterns and intricacies of their structures make you stand in awe of creation!
Plant lovers will enjoy many orchids, an enormous staghorn fern, a rose garden and many sub-tropical species that are available for sale in the nursery as well. For organic gardeners, you can also buy little tubs of ladybugs to introduce into your garden to eat the bugs that may be attacking your plants!
I encourage anyone who hasn't been there to experience this inspirational place!
